All You Ever Wanted to Know About Walking Shoes but Were Afraid to Ask

For advice about walking shoes, we went to Holly Wick, owner of Athletic Soles in Petaluma, CA. Does Holly (and her staff) ever know about shoes!  Here’s the scoop on walking shoes —

WW: What is the difference between a walking shoe and a running shoe?

HW: Most podiatrists recommend a “running” shoe over a “walking shoe.” The reason is, walking shoes don’t generally specify foot type so it’s one type for all. Running shoes however do specialize and come in neutral for under-pronators (foot falls to outside) and stability (over pronators foot falls to inside).  Don’t look at the heel

The Real Reasons You Need a Walking Partner

Why Walking Partners?

A walking partner is a friendly companion who makes walking a pleasurable and easy way to get a bit of exercise. She is someone you can talk to and keeps you company while sharing time outside.

Laughter and fun are easy companions that support our walking routine. Walking with a friend can actually change the way you think about getting exercise and how you experience this amazing aerobic activity.

When your focus is more on the conversation than on what you’re doing, that hill you are walking up is barely noticeable. Before you know it, you’re at the top sharing the view!

April Thoughts

“Despite the forecast, live like it’s spring.” Lilly Pulitzer

There’s power in walking together.

When we walk side by side we share a common direction that provides us with a reassuring way to be together out of doors, in the moment, sharing our stories.

Do you have a walking story? Tell us.

One Member’s Thoughts on Walking

I’ve never really understood the fascination with cell phones and computers. As a non-smart phone person, they appear dangerous – everyone typing away with heads down while crossing a busy intersection. But I was desperate. I was lonely.

I went to the keyboard on my computer and discovered a link to a business claiming, “Women Walk Better Together.” “Really!?” Just for the fun of it, I click. Up pops the website for women who are looking for walking partners for a whole host of reasons. The Common Questions section declares, “WomenWalking is all about community, laughter, networking and “walking!” I like it. On a whim I take a chance. I sign up.

Spring Greeting

Stop. Plant your feet on the earth. Stand quiet. Listen. Now close your eyes. Listen some more. Breathe. In, Out. Long, soft breath. Feel the energy soaring all around – above, beneath, within you. Experience the solid, consistent earth beneath your feet, connecting you.

Spring bubbling, blustery & bursting everywhere. Take a walk. Contact a member. Call a friend. Or just put on your shoes, throw open the door and go.

The winter solstice flickered by with barely a nod or a moment’s recognition as the shortest day of the year, the segue into winter and blessed light.
