Walking can be anything we want it to be.
Not much of a walker? Do you ever think you’d like to get outside for a little walk but feel discouraged because you can’t walk too far?
It’s one very good reason to have a companion to walk with. Someone who walks at your pace. Even if you walk only to the end of the block, it’s good!
Walking together, one to one, is the perfect way to motivate one another and chat while doing it. When you have company to share the walk with, you won’t even notice how far you’ve walked.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been with a friend for a walk, stopped to look up that hill that I can’t imagine I’ll be able to get to the top of, but with a friend, it feels like a positive challenge. Walking and talking our way up the hill, we stop to catch our breath, turn around and Wow, we did it!!
Taking a walk is a process. It’s a way to care for ourselves in our time and pace. It’s also a way to challenge ourselves, one step at a time.
It’s okay to walk to the end of the block and back. When you get home, you will think to yourself, Wow, I did it. That felt good. When you feel successful, it’s encouragement to try it again. Tomorrow you’ll be thinking to yourself, Well, I did it yesterday, let me try it again today.
Sure, there are people that climb mountains and run trails. But what’s that got to do with you? Nothing!
As Dr Suess once wrote, “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”
Applaud yourself for each success no matter how big or how small. Success is success. Feeling good is feeling good. With each success and moments of feeling good, life becomes a little brighter and shinier.
